#101 Differentiation, The Key to Emotional Independence AND Intimacy
Today we're diving into one of my favorite — and honestly, one of the most transformative things you can do to improve your close relationships and especially your marriage, and that is the skill of differentiation.
Some of you might not have even heard of this term before, so let me share the simplest definition I can.
Google provides a good one, so we'll go with it.
“Differentiation in relationships is the ability to maintain your sense of self, your values, and your individuality, all while staying emotionally connected to your partner.”
It's actually the opposite of being co-dependent. It's un-enmeshing yourself, maintaining your independence as a person AND being in an intimate partnership.
Differentiation allows you to express your own thoughts and feelings while also respecting your partner's thoughts and feelings.
Learning this skill is crucial for helping you to navigate conflicts constructively, it allows space for both people to matter and take up space in the relationship, and that freedom to be yourself is exactly what you need to build a more mature and authentic connection.
So there you have it.. Sounds great right? Well listen in, because understanding this concept is one thing, but actually implementing it, especially if it has been a long-term pattern or you, can be much more difficult, -and that is what I plan to help you with today.
Thanks for listening and sharing with a friend! 🤗
